MasterCard - Leon Stambler vs. MasterCard Inc. - Patent Litigation
MasterCard in a covered business method review (CBMR) of a patent purportedly related to electronic funds transfer using cryptographic security. Although earlier attempts to challenge this patent filed by others were unsuccessful, leading to several prior settlements by banks and other companies in litigation with Mr. Stambler, MasterCard obtained invalidation of the claims that had been asserted against MasterCard in a related district court litigation. Baker Botts handled the oral hearing at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as well as the appeal to the Federal Circuit, which affirmed the PTAB’s decision.
