HOUSTON – May 4, 2022 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, is pleased to announce it has received the 2022 Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Award in the “large law firm” category. The awards recognize outstanding pro bono work performed during the previous year through a recognized legal services provider or through direct legal representation on behalf of any nonprofit that serves the community.

“We are honored to receive this award from the Houston Bar Association,” said Keri Brown, Baker Botts’ Partner-in-Charge of Corporate Social Responsibility. “We take seriously our moral obligation to provide those most in need with legal assistance they cannot afford, and we handle such matters with the same zealous advocacy as we do for our fee-paying clients.”

This award recognizes the nearly 8,700 pro bono hours that Baker Botts’ Houston lawyers dedicated to pro bono service in 2021. The firm’s work included publishing the Winter Storm Uri Consumer Resource Guide for Texans affected by the devastating 2021 storm. The publication provided an array of information and tools to help individuals in Texas affected by the disaster.

In 2021, the firm’s Houston office also welcomed 15 new associates who took 10 guardianship cases from Houston Volunteer Lawyers as part of HVL’s medical-legal partnership with Texas Children’s Hospital. Baker Botts lawyers led the charge in helping HVL succeed in its inaugural “Wipe Out the Waitlist” initiative.

In addition, in October, Baker Botts began providing pro bono representation as part of the Houston Volunteer Lawyers’ Eviction Defense Attorney Program to ensure that low-income tenants in Harris County have the ability to exercise their legal rights when facing eviction.

In total, 146 lawyers in the firm’s Houston office worked on 188 separate pro bono matters in 2021.
