Baker Botts Partners with TCEQ in Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program

Release

HOUSTON, June 26, 2023 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, is pleased to announce its continued participation in the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP).

The MLEIP honors the legacy of former U.S. Congressman George “Mickey” Leland and his dedication to promoting sound environmental stewardship. The MLEIP offers college students a glimpse into the future of science and conservation, helping them launch their careers through hands-on paid summer internships. More than 2,000 interns have completed the program, many of whom are now in leadership positions and paying it forward by hiring and mentoring their own interns. For more than 30 years, a key mission of the MLEIP is to heighten awareness and encourage the participation of racially diverse, women and economically disadvantaged college students in environmental-related issues and policies.

This year’s Baker Botts intern is Ella Ip, a rising junior at Colby College in Maine, studying Environmental Policy. She will be working with the Firm’s Environmental, Safety and Incident Response Section in the Austin office.

“We are thrilled to have Ella join us this Summer.  The MLEIP is a tremendous opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in environmental law, and we are proud of Baker Botts’ history of supporting this great program,” said Scott Janoe, firmwide chair of Baker Botts' Environmental, Safety & Incident Response Section (ESIR).

“We are excited to continue our participation in the MLEIP, which has helped launch hundreds of environmental careers in Texas over the years, and we are proud to be part of this tremendous legacy” said Stephanie Bergeron Perdue, ESIR partner in Austin and former Deputy Executive Director at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

More than 500 students apply annually from across the nation for an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, expand their knowledge, fulfill college requirements, and learn marketable skills. Internship assignments are at the TCEQ, other state agencies, non-profits, and private companies in Texas.

The Baker Botts Environmental, Safety and Incident Response Section advances and protects its clients’ interests during the permitting process, before regulatory agencies, in the courtroom, at workplaces, and when a crisis hits. With more than 50 lawyers based in California, D.C., New York, and Texas, the team has handled federal and state environmental and safety matters nationwide.
