HOUSTON, January 22, 2024 - Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, announced today that Law360 has recognized the firm’s Environmental, Safety, and Incident Response (ESIR) Group and its Intellectual Property Department as 2023 “Practice Groups of the Year.”

Baker Botts’ Environmental, Safety and Incident Response (ESIR) team includes many of the leading environmental and safety practitioners in the U.S. Major companies, industry groups and governmental entities routinely entrust the team with their most significant environmental and safety challenges. In the last year alone, the group has been retained to assist with multiple crisis response matters arising from major environmental and safety incidents across the country; novel energy transition projects, including one of the world’s first and largest carbon capture and sequestration facilities; deep water port projects for offshore loading of crude oils; innovative olefin manufacturing projects at greenfield and refinery locations; and first-of-their-kind underground injection permits for management of coal combustion residual wastes; government and grand jury investigations; and major litigation, state and federal rulemaking challenges, and contested permitting proceedings.

The IP team’s 165 lawyers and patent professionals had an incredible year across the litigation, prosecution, and transactional spectrum. The IP team was on the winning side of over $1 billion in IP verdicts in 2023, including three of the top five patent damages awards in 2023.

One of the significant IP wins during Law360’s submission review period included a $279 million jury verdict win for Textron. In another case, the firm’s IP team was able to reverse a $469 million jury verdict against DISH Network – for whom the team obtained a favorable ruling at the ITC in a separate matter. In yet another case, the Second Circuit vacated a preliminary injunction against PepsiCo, Inc. in a trademark infringement action brought by Rise Brewing Co. And, for Helmerich & Payne, the IP team successfully turned the table on what started as a very serious patent infringement case against H&P. H&P defeated every one of the 8 patents that a competitor had asserted and obtained a settlement after a two week jury trial on the competitor’s infringement of one of H&P’s counter-asserted patents. The IP team ended 2023 with a recent win for DXC Technology in a trade secrets trial that resulted in a $210 million jury verdict.
