Aaron L. Ramcharan advises clients on key environmental issues in litigation, regulatory, and compliance matters, focusing especially on air quality, climate change, and global sustainability.
Prior to joining Baker Botts, Aaron received his LL.M. in Global Environment and Climate Change Law from Edinburgh Law School with Merit and his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law with Honors. His LL.M. dissertation focused on how the Paris Agreement’s principles are being translated into standards for corporations, especially in financial risk disclosure frameworks.
Aaron has extensive experience with sustainability and climate-related disclosures, including helping clients with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's climate-related financial disclosures rule, California's SB 253, SB 261, and AB 1305, the European Union's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (“CSRD”) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (“CSDDD”), and the United Kingdom's Climate-related Financial Disclosure Regulations (“CFDR”).
He also helps clients use voluntary sustainability reporting frameworks, such as the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (“TCFD”), the Global Reporting Initiative (“GRI”), the International Financial Reporting Standards (“IFRS”), the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and nature- and biodiversity-related reporting frameworks.
Aaron's knowledge of “greenwashing” regulations and risks informs his advising on sustainability and climate-related disclosures. He has helped clients effectively convey the risks and benefits associated with their products and businesses in an informed way while following the requirements and principles of regulations like the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s “Green Guides,” the European Union's Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, and Canada's Competition Act.
Aaron has experience helping clients craft and substantiate sustainability and climate-related targets and goals. This work often involves helping clients with their plans to reduce and avoid emissions, use voluntary carbon offsets and renewable energy credits, and weigh the implications of transition plans. He has experience partnering with major consulting firms to provide a tailored and interdisciplinary approach.
Aaron frequently speaks on sustainability and climate-related topics. Past venues include the Houston Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Association, and Baker Botts' Annual Environmental, Safety, and Incident Response Seminar. He often visits clients to facilitate discussions on emerging issues in sustainability and climate change law.
While in law school, Aaron served as a Dean's Fellow and as Chair of Academics in the Thurgood Marshall Legal Society at UT Law. He also served as the class representative to the faculty while at Edinburgh Law School. As a student, Aaron was published in the EU-based international law publication, Völkerrectsblog, the Texas Environmental Law Journal, and the Texas Law Review.
Prior to law school, Aaron worked as an Assistant Dean of Admission at Reed College. While a student at Reed, he served as Chair of the Student Committee for Academic Policy and Planning, Senior House Advisor, Chair of the Peer Academic Advising Program, Head Tutor in Epistemology and Logic, and as President of the Philosophical Society.
In his free time, Aaron is an active outdoorsman and has been playing jazz drums for 15 years. He also plays guitar and piano. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
