Val Svystun is a Senior Associate in the Intellectual Property Practice of the firm's New York office. Val's practice focuses on a variety of intellectual property matters including patent prosecution, due diligence, freedom to operate, patentability, post-grant proceedings, and litigation support. Val has translated her technical background in neuroscience and biotechnology into a robust life science intellectual property practice, where she advises leading life science research institutes, early-stage biotech companies, and multinational medical device companies.
Val is experienced in managing global patent portfolios and advising clients on technology development and strategic acquisitions. She routinely conducts freedom-to-operate analyses for product launches and prospective product acquisitions and/or partnerships.
In addition to her practice, Val is an active member of the Fairfield County Bar Association where she serves as co-chair of the Entertainment/Media/Intellectual Property Committee. Val also serves as an associate liaison for Women In Action, which strives to encourage collaboration and promotion of women in the global workforce and specifically within the legal industry.
Prior to her legal career, Val studied behavioral neuroscience at Connecticut College where she conducted research on the effects of clavulanic acid for attenuating substance dependency, as well as the analgesic effects of caffeine following repeated exertion stress. Both studies were presented at the Society for Neuroscience's annual conference. During her time at the University of Connecticut School of Law Val presented her research on concerns in European intellectual property law in the wake of Brexit at the World Intellectual Property Organization's yearly conference on intellectual property reform.
