WASHINGTON, D.C., August 3, 2020 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international law firm, announced today that partners Katharine Burke and Scott Keller received The National Law Journal's 2020 D.C. “Rising Stars” award that recognizes the Washington, D.C. region’s “40 most promising lawyers age 40 and under.” The award highlights lawyers who have wielded influence in their practice areas in the D.C. area and beyond.

“Any success in this profession, particularly litigation, is a result of building trust,” Ms. Burke said when asked about the keys to her success. “Your clients, colleagues, opposing counsel, and the court need to be able to rely on your word and your sound judgment. Maintaining credibility and being respectful must always be paramount.”

Mr. Keller shared the most valuable lesson he learned during the first year of practicing law. “Tear up your own writing during the editing process. You might be a good writer, but your writing can always be improved. Make it as effortless as possible for your reader to understand your arguments.”

Ms. Burke’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and licensing assertions. Ms. Burke has significant experience with a wide range of technologies. She has been part of trial teams in IP litigations in federal district court and at the U.S. International Trade Commission. Ms. Burke has also represented clients in contract disputes, bankruptcy proceedings, and appellate litigation.

Mr. Keller chairs the firm’s Supreme Court and Constitutional Law Practice. He has argued 11 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and has been counsel of record on over 90 U.S. Supreme Court briefs, including disputes involving regulatory, free speech, immigration, election, criminal, environmental, antitrust, intellectual property, and interstate water issues.
