FERC Reaffirms Support for Emerging Technologies

Video

On March 18, 2021, FERC reaffirmed its prior decision enabling the participation of emerging technologies in the energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets operated by RTOs and ISOs. These emerging technologies include electric storage, distributed generation, demand response, energy efficiency, thermal storage, and electric vehicles and associated supply equipment.

New market rules will enable these resources to be aggregated to satisfy wholesale market requirements. FERC also eased the path for greater participation of demand response resources in DER aggregations and clarified the interconnection process for aggregated QFs. Chairman Glick said that eliminating barriers to newer technologies, including energy storage and distributed energy resources, is a top priority.
