Overview

JoAnna Adkisson is an associate in the firm's Washington D.C. Litigation Practice, where she represents plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of high-stakes litigation matters in federal, state, and appellate courts across the country from complaint filing all the way through trial and appeal. She has extensive experience managing discovery in the most complex disputes, including in several multi-district litigations involving large and varied classes of plaintiffs, while remaining hands on and supportive of both her clients and litigation teams. This posture allows her to remain close to the facts and, ultimately, allows for the effective implementation of a clear and deliberate litigation strategy. Ms. Adkisson is also sought out as an adept communicator who handles high-stakes discovery disputes, oral arguments, fact and expert witness depositions, mock jury exercises, settlement discussions and mediations, and trial settings with a notable degree of competence and care.

Outside of her regular practice, Ms. Adkisson teaches courses in International Law, International Human Rights Law, Comparative Legal Systems, and The Nature and Function of Law.

Ms. Adkisson graduated from The George Washington Law School, where she was a member of George Washington's International Human Rights Law Clinic and was selected as one of a small cohort of students to complete the International Human Rights Law summer intensive at the University of Oxford. She also served as the Editor-in-Chief of The George Washington International Law Review, Chair of the Van Vleck Constitutional Moot Court Competition, and research assistant to both Professor Ralph Steinhardt and Professor Sonia Suter.

Additionally, Ms. Adkisson served as a legal extern to judges in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia for The Honorable Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and in the District of Oregon for The Honorable Judge Ann Aiken. Her law school internships also included time with the United States Agency for International Development, the Environmental Defense Fund, and an indigent criminal defense firm.

Prior to law school, Ms. Adkisson had a career in international development and human rights. She lived and worked in Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Experience

  • Biotechnology company – Member of trial team prosecuting a market manipulation case in California state court against a group of investor defendants that engaged in a “pump and dump” scheme in the company’s stock and caused its failure (Cal. Super. Ct.).Trial began in March 2024 and resolution of the litigation remains ongoing.
  • Electric utility – Member of small litigation team defending an electric utility in a breach of contract suit in the Southern District of Florida, where we won a summary judgment motion, resulting in dismissal of $750 million in claimed termination damages and other costs that ultimately led to a favorable settlement on the eve of trial.
  • Major pharmaceutical company – Representing major generic pharmaceutical companies in one of the largest-ever antitrust class actions, currently pending as multi-district litigation brought by state attorneys general, individual, direct action plaintiffs, and putative classes of direct, intermediate, and end purchaser plaintiffs.
  • Major grocer and distributor – Lead associate in litigation team representing a major grocer and a major distributor in asserting antitrust claims in multi-district litigations directed to multi-billion dollar consumer sectors.
  • Municipal water service provider – Lead associate in internal investigation into whistleblower allegations of fraud by a municipal water services provider.
  • Steel company – Represented JSW Steel’s U.S. subsidiaries in a group boycott action against its leading competitors.
  • Social services non-profit – Conducted internal investigation and review of corporate compliance for federal government contractor.
  • Biotechnology companies – Defense of the first two biotechnology companies sued by the Estate of Henrietta Lacks for alleged unjust enrichment.
  • U.S. trade association – Represented trade association in amicus brief before the Ninth Circuit in challenge to City of Berkley’s ban on natural gas appliances.
  • U.S. trade association – Advice regarding PAC governance and compliance with the Federal Election Campaign Act.
  • Pro Bono Counsel for Jason Lively in the recovery of $1.56 million from the State of West Virginia following his exoneration after 15 years of wrongful imprisonment.
  • Pro Bono Counsel for client being denied gender-affirming medical care by state prison in constitutional and ADA litigations, wherein our litigation team won a motion for preliminary injunction and several critical discovery disputes.
