Overview

Brandt Thomas Roessler's practice focuses on white collar defense, corporate investigations, and international arbitration. Brandt has been involved in a wide variety of complex matters, ranging from the investigation of corruption and money laundering in South America, to an international arbitration arising out of a subsea gas pipeline rupture.

Brandt also represents clients pro bono in LGBTQ civil rights cases, including challenges to discriminatory state laws, and oppositions to harmful proposed regulations. As an extension of his advocacy, Brandt formerly served as Co-Chair of the NY Emerging Leaders Committee of Lambda Legal, the nation's oldest and largest legal organization dedicated to the full recognition of civil rights for LGBTQ persons and individuals living with HIV.

While in law school, Brandt interned for Justice Kerry P. FitzGerald of the Court of Appeals for the Fifth District of Texas, won the Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition in 2015, also receiving an award for writing the best brief, and served as President of his law school's LGBTQ student organization for two years.

  • Representing an energy company in an arbitration arising out of the exploration, development, and extraction of an oil reservoir in the Middle East (UNICTRAL, Middle East)
  • Defended multinational engineering firm in arbitration against breach of confidentiality and misappropriation of trade secret claims in connection with project to build fuel refining plant in Texas (AAA, Houston)
  • Represented a European technology company in an arbitration arising out of a license agreement for cellphone technologies (ICC, New York)
  • Represented an Asia-based trader of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in an arbitration arising out of an agreement for the purchase and sale of LNG, wherein the counterparty seeks to avoid performance by claiming market conditions have frustrated the purpose of the agreement (ICC, New York)
  • Represented an African energy company in an arbitration with a contractor arising out of the construction of small-scale LNG liquefaction facilities (ICDR, New York)
  • Represented a Middle East energy company in an arbitration with a contractor relating to the construction of an offshore gas pipeline (ICC, Middle East)

White Collar Crime & Corporate Investigations

  • Defending defense contractor executive in federal investigation into allegations of money laundering and falsifying government records
  • Defending defense contractor against civil lawsuit accusing client of violating the Anti-Terrorism Act by allegedly making protection payments to the Taliban and other terrorist organizations in the Middle East
  • Defended general contractor against criminal investigation into allegations of falsifying business records, billing fictitious labor hours, and violating New York lien laws
  • Defended construction executive against charges of first-degree grand larceny, money laundering, bid-rigging, bribery, and falsification of business records in connection with $15 million bribery scheme
  • Conducted internal investigation for multiple branches of international bank to assess exposure to high-profile South American corruption and money laundering scandal
  • Conducted internal investigation on behalf of special litigation committee to assess shareholder allegations of wrongdoing by executives and directors for large real estate investment trust (REIT)
  • Defended bank in SEC investigation relating to allegations of fraud in connection with mergers/acquisitions to which bank had served as financial advisor
  • Represented clients defrauded by former investments manager in presentation of case to federal prosecutors

General Litigation Experience

  • Advised global construction and engineering firm in dispute with telecommunications company regarding design and installation of fiber optic network in multiple U.S. markets
  • Represented multinational manufacturer of digital cameras and photography film in efforts to collect judgment, such as obtaining writs of execution, executing bank levies/garnishments, and issuing third-party subpoenas and post-judgment discovery
  • Represented numerous subcontractors and construction material suppliers against general contractors and property owners in the collection of unpaid debts, including filing suit and receiving favorable judgments, recording said judgments, garnishing debtor's bank accounts, and recording liens against and foreclosing upon debtor's real property*
  • Represented numerous parents and caregivers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in applications to establish guardianship over the children when turning eighteen years of age*

Pro Bono

  • In partnership with the ACLU of Texas, challenging constitutionality of recently enacted Texas law aimed at banning and criminalizing drag performances, a culturally significant art form for the LGBTQ community
  • In partnership with Lambda Legal, challenging legality of actions by Texas Governor, Attorney General, and state child protection agency that expanded definition of “child abuse” to include anyone who provides medically necessary gender-affirming care to minors
  • In partnership with Lambda Legal, challenging constitutionality of Tennessee state law prohibiting transgender persons from correcting the gender marker on their birth certificates
  • In partnership with Lambda Legal, challenged constitutionality of North Carolina state law imposing prerequisite that transgender persons under medical surgery prior to correcting the gender marker on their birth certificates
  • In partnership with the National Trans Bar Association, filed public comments to federal government opposing new proposed rules that would have restricted transgender persons’ access to single-sex temporary and emergency shelters consistent with their gender identity
  • In partnership with American Gateways, filed public comments to federal government opposing new proposed immigration and asylum rules that would have harmed LGBTQ asylum seekers
  • Represented children's rights advocacy group pro bono in the submission of an amicus curiae brief to the Supreme Court of Texas
  • Represented several clients pro bono in connection with their respective applications for permanent residency in the United States, including LGBTQ asylum seekers
