Overview

Zach Shepard is an Associate in the firm's intellectual property group who brings a sharp attention to detail and strong analytical skills to his full-service practice. With a strong technical background, Zach understands the nuances of complex technologies and effectively collaborates with engineers, inventors, and technical experts. He has worked extensively with clients in the upstream oil & gas, energy tech, telecommunications, streaming, and biomedical industries and has helped them develop or defend their cutting-edge technologies. Zach's ability to translate intricate technical concepts into clear legal strategies allows him to provide insightful counsel for clients operating at the forefront of innovation.

Zach has leveraged these skills through his litigation experience in Federal District Courts and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. While representing blue-chip companies there, Zach co-authored dozens of legal briefs on complex issues, worked closely with technical experts, and managed critical aspects of case strategy and advocacy.

Beyond litigation, Zach manages the prosecution of clients’ patent portfolios and advises clients on Freedom to Operate (FTO) assessments, patentability analyses, and IP due diligence. His ability to distill complex patent landscapes into clear, business-focused recommendations ensures that clients can confidently navigate competitive markets while mitigating IP risks.

Before joining the firm, Zach held two judicial externships: one in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and another in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Zach also worked for his law school's intellectual property clinic, where he assisted in the management of client intellectual property portfolios.
