Baker Botts Intellectual Property Lawyers Recognized in World Trademark Review 1000
HOUSTON, February 9, 2023 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international technology, energy and life sciences law firm, announced that its Branding, Advertising and Copyright group and three of its attorneys were recognized in the 2023 edition of World Trademark Review 1000 (WTR 1000) – The World’s Leading Trademark Professionals as “Recommended Individuals.”
The WTR 1000 noted Baker Botts’ “deep bench and serious expertise in trademark matters,” conferring national rankings for Baker Botts’s Texas and New York-based trademark teams in both prosecution and litigation and recognizing three Baker Botts attorneys as among the world’s “top trademark professionals:” partners Paul Reilly and Suzanne Hengl, and senior associate Julie Albert.
The publication awarded a gold-level ranking to partner and Branding, Advertising and Copyright section chair Paul Reilly. WTR 1000 emphasized Reilly’s counselling and advice on clients’ brand strategies and litigation across a spectrum of trademark-related disputes, including, recently, in a trade dress dispute involving automotive wheel designs. It likewise highlighted his “deep expertise navigating opposition and cancellations before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) and in the beverage and technology industries.” In addition to his trademark acumen, Dallas-based Reilly’s practice also comprises copyright, trade dress, false advertising, and unfair competition litigation and counseling across industries.
WTR 1000’s recognition of New York-based partner Suzanne Hengl noted her extensive knowledge and invaluable counseling, including client praise about her “extremely helpful” advice, “well-reasoned” opinions, and her knowledge of recent cases and how they apply. Clients deeply appreciate Hengl’s skillful handling of matters, even adding that they “could not function without her.” As a leader of the Branding, Advertising and Copyright group, Suzi is also a go-to resource for clients on advertising and copyright litigation, prosecution, and counseling, IP diligence, drafting and negotiation of IP and marketing agreements, advertising claims review, and counseling concerning promotions.
In her first national individual ranking, the publication also highlighted senior associate Julie Albert, noting her experience advising organizations including globally renowned education institutions and food and beverage companies, and praised “her obvious trademark prowess.” Albert, who is based in New York, is a trusted partner to clients on strategic and contentious trademark, copyright, advertising and trade secret matters nationwide, frequently appears on behalf of clients in state and federal courts in intellectual property disputes, and regularly presents at industry, client and firm events on emerging topics in her field.
Recognizing Baker Botts’s “team of attorneys exclusively dedicated to securing clients’ brands through a strategic emphasis on achieving their commercial objectives,” WTR 100 gave the Firm a Silver ranking in Texas, noting the team’s broad capabilities “across a range of industries” and “covering the entire lifecycle of brands and trademarks.”
It also gave a Bronze ranking to the New York Branding, Advertising and Copyright team in both the “prosecution and strategy” and “enforcement and litigation” categories, with clients emphasizing its “global reach” and that the team is considered to be among clients’ “most trusted advisors” for “numerous household brands in all areas of intellectual property.”
