Legal Challenges to State Actions Affecting the Rights of LGBTQ+ Persons
Speeches & Presentations
Baker Botts Senior Associate, Brandt Thomas Roessler, participated as a Panelist on the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance's virtual panel, "Legal Challenges to State Actions Affecting the Rights of LGBTQ+ Persons."
Panelists discussed ongoing legal challenges to actions by state governments interpreted by LGBTQ+ advocates as harmful to LGBTQ+ persons, particularly children. Discussion focused on:
- Florida House Bill 1557, commonly referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” law, that on its face bans public schools from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity in Grades K-3, but has been interpreted by many as potentially stigmatizing LGBTQ+ children
- Texas state efforts to block transgender youth from accessing medical treatments related to gender identity.
