HOUSTON, July 14, 2021 – Baker Botts L.L.P., a leading international energy, technology and life sciences law firm, is pleased to announce its participation in the Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP).

The MLEIP honors the legacy of former U.S. Congressman George “Mickey” Leland and his dedication to promoting sound environmental stewardship. The MLEIP offers college students a glimpse into the future of science and conservation, helping them launch their careers through hands-on paid summer internships. More than 2,000 interns have completed the program, many of whom are now in leadership positions and paying it forward by hiring and mentoring their own interns. A key mission of the MLEIP, which is celebrating its 30^th anniversary this year, is to heighten awareness and encourage the participation of racially diverse, women and economically disadvantaged college students in environmental-related issues and policies.

This year’s intern at Baker Botts is Joaquin Gonzalez, a sophomore environmental science major at the University of Houston, who will be working with the firm’s Environmental, Safety and Incident Response Section in the Houston and Austin offices.

“We are excited to participate in this program and also give Joaquin a glimpse of the environmental work we do at Baker Botts,” said Scott Janoe, firmwide chair of Baker Botts' Environmental, Safety & Incident Response Section (ESIR).

“The MLEIP has produced many environmental leaders in Texas over the years, and we are eager to help further its important mission,” said Stephanie Bergeron Perdue, ESIR partner in Austin and former Deputy Executive Director at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

More than 500 students apply annually from across the nation for an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, expand their knowledge, fulfill college requirements, and learn marketable skills. Internship assignments are at the TCEQ, other state agencies, non-profits, and private companies in Texas.
